KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on Friday has unofficially retained his position as the President of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) after becoming the sole candidate in next month’s party election.

Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu also retained his position as Deputy President. According to Bersatu election committee chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Syed Jaafar Albar, the official announcement will be made once the elections end in August.

On the contrary, The vice-presidency position is not without contention as 17 candidates vying for the posts, among the candidates were Senior Minister (Education) Dr Radzi Md Jidin, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions) Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof and Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee.

For the Armada chief post, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal and Muzzamil Ismail  will be constesting for the position.

The Supreme Council post, a total of 163 candidates will be vying for the sit. Last March 16, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad won the Bersatu chairman uncontested. However, Mahathir and four Bersatu Deputy President Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, MPT Member Dr Maszlee Malik, Armada chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, and Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah gave up their position when the aligned in the opposition block at the parliament in May 18
