A political analyst have said that the Sarawak Budget of 2019 is to center on the requirements of the people to make sure that GPS, Gabungan Parti Sarawak coalition continues to be relevant as the political party for the Sarawakians, particularly the bumiputeras who require basic infrastructure development.
Prof Awang Azman Awang Pawi, the University Malaya Associate Professor have said that the move of the state governorate for imposing 5% tax on petroleum products that includes natural gas in the budget of 2019 was for increasing the revenue of the state and the new source of income was expected to generate around RM4 billion every year.
The political and economic strategy that shows that Sarawak is serious when it comes to securing revenue in accordance with the state governments rights and Malaysian agreement of 1963 as Awang Azman commenting on Sarawak budget presented by the Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, the Sarawak Chief Minister in the state legislative assembly.
He also stated that the move of the government to impose a 5% tax on petroleum products is known to have put Pakatan Harapan government in a complete dilemma. In case the Pakatan Harapan government isn’t satisfied with 5% Sarawakins is going to stand behind the state government and is going to support the next state election. He is also known to have admitted the proposal of the budget of RM11.9 billion for 2019. It was the biggest till date and had been aimed at winning the support of people, particularly the ones in the rural areas in next state election.
