Azmin Ali, the Economic Affairs Minister has reiterated that the decision of Pakatan Harapan not to have political appointees and politicians helm government-linked companies after the revelation of RM3 million salary of Irwan Serigar, the former Treasury secretary-general.
He said that it has been decided that no more politicians are going to be appointed to any board. They want the professionals to run the GLCs but they also want the allowances and pay to be reasonable enough. He says that they will not be able to pay high pay to the person who is running a GLC that belongs to the government. This axing of the political appointments had been done in the last few months.
Azmin said that the salary has to be reasonable. He had been asked to respond to Lim Guan Eng, the Finance Minister’s announcement in the Parliament that Irwan earned RM3 million in between 2011 and 2018 prior to the contract being terminated. This income didn’t include other forms of income like allowances. As per Guan Eng, the board member Irwan held a non-independent, non-executive position in 23 companies under the Minister of Finance Incorporated.
The companies that had been listed were 1MDB. This is where he had been the non-executive chairman. Others are Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd as the non-executive chairman, Khazanah Nasional Berhad as the director, TRX City Sdn Bhd as the non-executive chairman, and Permodalan Nasional Berhad as the non-executive and non-independent director.
In these positions, Irwan have taken home incomes in between RM9,000 and RM 1,212,797.87 which amounts to RM3.868 million. When he had been asked about the GLC review and also the government linked investment companies, Azmin said that the professionals have been appointed for managing them. He said that they have reviewed the membership of the boards of the main GLCs. According to him, they have removed all employed professionals and politicians for managing them.
