Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the Malaysian Prime Minister has arrived in Bali to attend the Asean Leader’s Gathering inauguration. This makes it the most nostalgic return to the Asean meeting in island resort after fifteen years. This was the Asean Summit in Bali which he bid farewell to the ten-member grouping when he had stepped down as the Prime Minister Malaysia in the year 2003.
This is the second visit of Dr. Mahathir to Indonesia, since he became the prime minister for the 2nd time after the historic general election of Malaysia in the month of May. With the arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport at 11:45 Dr. Mahathir had been welcomes by the Minister of Public Works and Housing in Indonesia at Basuki Hadimuljono. The Prime Minister was accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali: Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, the Foreign Minister, and the officials from the Office of the Prime Minister.
The theme of ALG is to Achieve Sustainable Goals and also to Overcome Development Gap with the help of the global and regional collaborative actions. Dr. Mahathir is going to offer his remarks at a gathering and also attend the official dinner that is to be hosted by Preside Joko Widodo of Indonesia. Other Asean leaders who are going to gather are Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalamm, President Rodrigo Duterte of Philippinesm, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha of Thailand, Prime Minister of Laos, Myanmar President U Win Myint, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc of Vietnam, Thongloun Sisoulith, and Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Dr. Mahathir can also hold bilateral discussion with the Asean counterparts on the sidelines of the association. Since the gathering is going to be hold at the same as the annual meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, the Asean leaders are going to engage with Christine Lagarde, the managing director of IMF; Jim Yong Kim, the World Bank President, and Antonio Guterres the secretary-general of United Nations.
