Mahathir Mohamad, the Prime Minister of Malaysia is going to make a two-day official visit to Thailand on Wednesday. The Foreign Ministry said that it is a part of the introductory visit to the South-east Asian neighboring countries as assuming the position of the prime minister.
During the time of the visit, Mahathir is going to meet with the Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha and also attend the official dinner. The visit is going to offer an opportunity for the 2 leaders to strengthen the bilateral relations along with the cooperation in between the two countries. It is also going to highlight the current policies of the government and its stand on specific issues of the mutual concern.
The visit will add momentum to the peace dialogue of Southern Thailand dialogue process. The Malaysian government is known to have appointed a former Police Inspector-General Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor as the new facilitator for all the peace talks.
The ministry commented on the economic cooperation and said that the total trade with Thailand in the year 2017 has recorded a significant growth of 18.43% for reaching RM98.69 billion from RM86.46 billion in the year 2016.
Thailand is known to be the 5th largest trading partner of Malaysia and is also the 2nd largest among the Asean countries following Singapore. During the time of the visit Dr. Mahathir is going to be accompanied by Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Alihis wife; Darell Leiking, International Trade and Industry Minister Ignatius; Saifuddin Abdullah, the Foreign Minister, and senior government officials. As a matter of fact, Dr. Mahathir has scheduled to meet Malaysian community in Thailand.
