The Registrar of Societies (RoS) reported that after his resignation in the midst of the political instability in late February, Dr Mahathir Mohamad is no longer the chairman of PPBM.
A letter sent to the party by RoS dated May 5 said the resignation of Mahathir was valid and that the service of PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin in the capacity of president was also valid.
They highlighted that after the resignation of the chairman, the president of the PPBM has the right to act as chairman until elections are held in accordance with clause 16.9 of the constitution of the PPBM.
The corporate communication unit of RoS confirmed the authenticity of the letter addressed to FMT. In view of this, RoS ‘confirmation comes in the wake of a statement by PPBM ‘s chairman of the election committee, Syed Hamid Albar, that there are “no contenders” in the upcoming party elections for the chairman’s post. Whether Mahathir will be returning unopposed needs to be seen.
Mahathir had resigned as chairman of the PPBM on Feb 24, only hours after he sent his resignation letter as prime minister and a day after Muhyiddin declared that Pakatan Harapan had abandoned the party.
The then secretary-general of the party, Marzuki Yahya, had said Mahathir’s resignation was rejected by the PPBM Supreme Council, though.
Knowledge leader Radzi Jidin challenged Mahathir ‘s place as president, who claimed the supreme council did not have the authority under the constitution of the party to refuse his resignation.
